Joel Simpson


Joel SimpsonJoel Earl Simpson studied law at the University of Guyana (2001 - 2004), where he got his BA. In 2003, he founded and co-chaired the Students Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), later to become Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in June, 2013.
In 2012, he received a Chevening scholarship for pursuing a Master of Laws Degree in Human Rights Law from the University of Nottingham (UK). His research interests include homophobia, human rights, gender, vulnerability, sexual health, stigma and discrimination.
He has extensive experience in these areas, having worked as the UNESCO Human Rights Researcher at the HIV Education Unit at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus in Trinidad,and human rights associate at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country office in Guyana. He is
  • co-founder of the Trinidad and Tobago Anti Violence Project (TTAVP),
  • former board member of the Caribbean Forum for the Liberation and Acceptance of Genders and Sexualities (CariFLAGS) and
  • member of the human rights legal core of the (Caribbean Vulnerable Communities Coalition (CVC).
He also sits on the advisory committee to the LBT Rights Programme at Human Rights Watch (HRW), among many other regional and international affiliations in the LGBTI and sexual rights and health movements.

Joel Simpson participated in one of the "couch sessions" at the Antwerp conference.
