Alexis Musanganya


Alexis MusanganyaAt the age of twenty, war and civil unrest in Rwanda forced Alexis Musanganya (Kigali, Rwanda, 1974) to flee and leave his country. After a long journey, he arrived in Canada as a refugee in July 1998.
In 1999, Alexis started studying computer science; three years later he obtained his bachelor's degree. That same year, 2002, he officially became a Canadian citizen. In 2004, Alexis fiounded Arc en ciel d'Afrique, a community organisation that brings together LGBT immigrants of African and Carribean origin living in Québec. The organisation was founded to educate the general Afro-Caribbean community on the issue of homosexuality, create an open dialogue and promote tolerance.
In 2009, he created the Afro-Carribean LGBT film festival during Black History month, which has now become a regular feature on the calendar of events.

Alexis Musanganya (for an interview in French click here): I have become an ambassador of sorts for the LGBT Africans who are afraid of coming out to their communities." While well aware that there is still a lot of work to be done in terms of acceptance, Alexis Musanganya continues to educate people on LGBT issues while hosting actvities that create awareness for the cause.

At the Antwerp conference, Alexis Musanganya participated in the panel discussion of transitions and best practices.
