Gloria Careaga


Gloria CaeagaGloria Careaga Perez (Guadalajara, Jal. México, 1947) has been a teacher at the faculty of psychology at the National Autonomous University of México (UNAM) since 1979, and a co-coordinator of the association "El Clóset de Sor Juana", which aims at defending the human rights of women, especially those who suffer from discrimination against them on the grounds of their sexual orientation - and one of the oldest lesbian groups in México. This association started its activities in 1991, and became a registered entity in 1994.
In "El Clóset de Sor Juana" Gloria Careaga worked closely together with Patria Jiménez, chair of "El Clóset" and in the period 1997 - 2000 the first openly lesbian member of parliament in a Latin American country, as representative for the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

Gloria Careaga has focused her work in the past years on gender issues. She co-founded a University Gender Studies Programme in 1992, which she directed for twelve years. There she founded the department for Sexual Diversity Studies, and taught new perspectives for the analysis of masculinity.
She has published various anthologies and articles.

Gloria Caraega also co-founded the Fundación ArcoIris (Rainbow Foundation), which aims as research and study to promote the repect for sexual diversity.

Internationally, Gloria Careaga has been involved in ILGA for a long period. In 1999, her group was elected for hosting ILGA's Women's secretariat. Later, she was elected as female secretary of the Latin American region of ILGA, together with Beto de Jesus as male secretary. In 2009, she was elected as female secretary-general of ILGA (together with Renato Sabbadini as male SG), a position in which she was re-elected in 2010 and 2012.

She participated in the first "couch session" at the Antwerp conference.
