Jan Peumans

Jan PeumansJan Peumans (Maastricht, 1951) graduated at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1974 in political and social sciences, and studied at the Institute for Developing Countries of this university. As a member of the Volksunie (Union of the People), he served as alderman in the municipality of Riemst from 1983 till 1994. After serving as mayor (1995 - 2006) of Riemst, he resumed the position as alderman. In the Provincial Parliament of (the Belgian province of) Limburg he served as chief delegate; in 2004 he was elected to the Flemish parliament as an MP for the New Flemish Alliance N-VA. This is a Flemish-nationalist and liberal conservative party. Although this party won the 2010 elections on the federal scale in Belgium and participated in the world-record breaking long deliberations about the formation of a new government, it did not participate in the government coalition that was finally based on the elections: the federal government of prime minister Eli Di Rupo.

Jan Peumans started his professional career in mental health car in the Dutch province of Limburg, but has been involved in public transport management since 1991, when he became marketing and strategy director of the Flemish public transport company De Lijn (until 2004). With his wife Marie-Jeanne he has three sons and a daughter; he is grandfather of three children now.

Jan Peumans spoke the fare-well speech on the 2nd of August at the Antwerp conference.
