Linda Bellos

Linda BellosLinda Bellos (London, 1950) was raised in Brixton and educated at Silverthorne Girls’ Secondary Modern School, Dick Shephard Comprehensive School and the University of Sussex. She married in 1970 and gave birth to two children, in 1974 and 1976. She came out as a lesbian in 1980. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1983. She was vice-chair of the successful Black Sections campaign to select African Caribbean and Asian parliamentary and local candidates within the Labour Party. In 1985 Linda Bellos was elected as a Labour representative to Lambeth London Borough Council and was leader of the council between 1986 and 1988. She was the second black woman to become leader of a British local authority. Bellos resigned as leader on 21 April 1988 after disputes within the Labour Party over the setting of the Council budget. She was a prominent figure in left-wing politics in London in the 1980s.
She was director director of EDHR Solutions, a board member and chair of the Institute of Equality and Diversity Practitioners. She is a well-known published author, broadcaster and public speaker. She has worked as an equality, diversity and human rights practitioner for nearly 30 years, and has undertaken pioneering work across all equality groups at a tome when it was not popular to do so.
Linda Bellos is a consultant who also designs and delivers blended learning, including courseware for her company's learning website.
She enjoys teaching others and delivers face-to-face training courses to senior managers and front line staff. This keeps her in touch with the reality of equality and human rights, not just the theory. Linda Bellos is regularly asked to chair events and conferences, and often appears as a guest on TV and radio.
At the Antwerp conference, Linda Bellos participated in the panel discussion on transitions and best practices. In 2006, she was awarded an OBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours for services to diversity.
