Dev Narayan Chaudhary

The Nepalese Dev Narayan Chaudhary has been involved in the Blue Diamond Society (Sahayogi Samaj Rajbiraj) for many years. The Blue Diamond Society (BDS) was established in 2001, and is working for sexual minorities. A year after its foundation, Dev Narayan Chaudhary joined.

In a conservative country like Nepal which still disapproves of any sexual behaviour other than heterosexual that has been extremely challenging. The first challenge for the BDS was its registration as an NGO sexual minorities because Nepal's constitution doesn’t recognize sexual minorities. Therefore, the BDS registered as a sexual health programme.
The BDS work in Kathmandu with local communities and on a national level with the mission to improve the sexual health, human rights and well-being of sexual and gender minorities in Nepal including third-genders, gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), bisexuals, and lesbians.
The BDS being the only organisation of its kind, its activities have a tremendous outreach impact; it has reached up to 350000 LGBTI/MSM. The key activities include
  • health promotion for sexual minorities,
  • psycho-social counseling,
  • raising awareness of HIV/AIDS,
  • promoting human rights and sexual health,
  • documenting human right violations,
  • publicizing these incidents on the local, national and international level,
  • legal counseling and litigation services to the victims and families,
  • legal and constitutional campaign,
  • lobbying for policy change,
  • advocacy and media campaign,
  • income generation activities to poor LGBTI/MSM.
Dev Narayan Chaudhary's main experience lies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and in the human rights program.

At the Antwerp conference, he participated in the panel discussion on transitions and best practices.
