Christian Rumu

Christian RumuBurundi, the country that was once part of a German colony, but was handed over to the Belgians after the end of the first World War (1918), became an independant state in 1962.
The criminalisation of homosexuality in April, 2009, was a large step backwards for a country that, at the same time, was to ablish the death sentence. However, it also meant an increased interest in the subject, and a possibility for debate and action. One of the few organisations that stood up for gay rights in Burundi is the Association pour le Respect et les Droîts des Homosexuels (ARDHO).
Within the organisation, Christian Rumu performs a key role as communications officer. Now studying in Boston, USA, he was invited by the Belgian King Baudouin Foundation to participate in the Antwerp conference, in which he contrubuted especially in the panel on transitions and best practices.
